How much would pay for your site to be listed in the 23rd position of a search you did on Google?
Sounds like a dumb question?
You are right it is sort of a dumb question and for a number of reasons!
The biggest reason is you would be at position 23 (or the second page of results) which for marketing any product will never work.
Why do you think it will not work?
Is it possible that most people only click on the links on the first page?
Yes
Is it possible that the links near the top of the first page get clicked on more than the links near the bottom of the page?
Yes and even more than likely if the link or page to your product or service appears below the seventh item listed on the first page of the search results, no one or very few people are going to click on it.
Might you wonder why that is so?
Most people search for what they want and most people find what they want in the very first few results on the first page and could care less what appears after those first few links.
Do you use search engines a lot and sift through pages of information looking for something specific?
You probably would do this if you were looking for some off the wall information or are an on-line marketer and looking for your product or service. But most people are not searching for off the wall information and are not on-line marketers looking for their product or service.
Most people already know what they want when using a search engine and find it in the first few results of the first page and they look no further. This rule of search results applies whether there are 100 or 1 Billion total results. The total results do not matter, except maybe to an advertising company who you pay to get you listed within those first few results on the first page. The only thing that matters is for your product or service to appear in most if not all of the first seven positions of the first page of search results for the user.
Your job as the business owner marketing your business, product or service on-line is to make sure people find you right away in the search engines.
My job as an on-line business owner is to make sure people find me right away too!
Why is that important to me? Well if they cannot find me, then they cannot find you and that means no sales for me or for you.
But you see I do not really have a problem of getting found on the Internet, when I talk to people who are looking for me or what I do on the Internet. If they could just remember my name or that I could help them with their very small businesses on the Internet, well hopefully my marketing would pay off then!
In the mean time, if you have a very small US business and wish to advertise it please take a look at the Very Small Business US site and decide if you want to pay me now or later to help you. It really does not matter to me how long you wait and whether you do it now or later, I still make money either way. Now I make less and later I make more, so take your time.
Oh and by the way this site, the one you are on now, was appearing at position 23 out of 1 billion plus results in my searches for a key term I was looking for this morning. Over the next few weeks I am quite sure it will move up in the results.
As of May 05, 2012 this article appears at position 5 on page one of at least one popular search engine, based on a specific generic search term used to locate advertising for business. The search result is also organic.
This also means that if this was an article I was writing specifically talking about your very small businesses, products or services, the odds are people would find you really easy.
Oh never mind, I am just a hot dog vendor, who plays around with web sites in my spare time, maybe you should ask a friend to help you or find a pricey advertising company to pay for better search results for your web site.
